Digital Dollar Guide: Song Royalties Manifesto
By Chris Cooke | Last Updated: May 2022
‘The Song Royalties Manifesto’ was informed by the ‘Dissecting The Digital Dollar’ series of reports and guides produced by CMU Insights for the UK Music Managers Forum, and especially ‘The Song Royalties Guide’.
It proposes a new way for licensing song rights and processing song royalties in the streaming domain, which would address current issues that mean the streaming income of songwriters is subject to delays and deductions, and monies might not flow at all due to bad data and disputes.
The manifesto was published by MMF in May 2022 in response to the projects instigated by the UK government’s Intellectual Property Office following the UK Parliament’s inquiry into the economics of streaming, and in particular the work considering a music industry code around music rights metadata.
